Music Ministry

St. Barbara Choir

We invite you to join our music ministry choir to support our worship in song!

St. Barbara’s choir predominantly sings at Sunday 11:00 A.M. Mass but rotates occasionally to sing at Saturday 4:00 P.M. and Sunday 8:00 A.M. We sing for special holidays and often have special instrumentalists join us for those occasions as well. We sing a variety of styles and types of music, so there should be something for everyone!

Our choir is currently comprised of mostly adults but we welcome anyone of any age and musical capability and are in need of both male and female voices. No musical experience needed (honestly!!) and the only requirement is that you should be able to read and come with an open mind for learning! We welcome new members at any time of the year.

Our rehearsals typically align with the school year (we do not sing at Mass during the summer months) and take place in the church on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M.). Raising your voice to God is a wonderful tribute and ministry! Please see the choir director, Emily Wardle Spina, at the organ for more information or feel free to speak with any choir member to get the inside scoop. We hope to see — and hear — you soon!

The choir schedule for rehearsals and masses can be found here. The site is always current and updated.

St. Barbara Cantors

We welcome strong singers to inquire with Emily Wardle Spina, Music Director, about becoming a cantor. Teenagers and adults are welcome to become cantors, and both males and females are welcome! Cantors lead Mass in song on a rotational basis and are asked to practice and prepare the Mass’s music in advance so as to be most effective in their leadership. Cantors should have basic music-reading and music-preparation skills.

Music/Choir Director, Organist Biography

Emily Wardle Spina is the music and choir director as well as one of two organists at St. Barbara Parish. A native of the Pittsburgh area (Belle Vernon), Emily has played the piano and organ for various churches of various denominations since she was in 9th grade. Her primary instrument is the bassoon but one of her favorite things to do while growing up was learn how to play many instruments, so Emily is pretty nimble around most instruments you’d find in a band.

Emily attended Duquesne University for Music Education and has been the Elementary General Music Teacher and Elementary Choir Teacher at Washington Park Elementary School in Washington, PA since 2010. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education (Curriculum & Instruction) from Clarion University, and also holds a program specialist certification in English as a Second Language.

Emily has performed with numerous community and professional ensembles; has served/currently serves as a marching band assistant for South Allegheny and Belle Vernon marching bands; regularly performs in the pit orchestra for local musicals; and maintains an active private lesson studio comprised of piano, woodwind, brass, and beginning string students.

She has served as associate organist and choir director at St. Barbara’s since September 2016 and music director since January 2017.

Emily also serves as the Music Education Advocacy Representative and Treasurer for PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) District 1.

Emily lives in Bridgeville and recently got married this summer at St. Barbara’s. (Her husband is the “official” page turner for longer choir anthems, so keep an eye out for him! He’s gotten her to learn about basketball and football, to the point of her being the bookkeeper for his JV and Varsity basketball games and scoreboard worker for football games, so they call it even.)

Emily can be best reached via email: emily@stbarbpgh.org.
